A New Way to Get Your Chipotle
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a burrito. Chipotle has taken a big step into the future by partnering with Zipline, a drone delivery company, to start delivering orders via drone to certain customers. This innovative service, called “Zipotle,” is designed to save time and keep meals fresh while offering a unique experience for customers.
The new delivery option uses Zipline's fleet of quiet, zero-emission aircraft to deliver orders. According to the press release, this initiative aims to provide a quick and convenient way for customers to enjoy their food from places that are traditionally hard to reach, such as backyards and public parks.
The Drone Delivery Capital of America
Currently, Zipotle is only available in the greater Dallas area, which has become known as the drone delivery capital of America. This location was chosen for its potential to support the growth of drone delivery services and to offer an efficient and environmentally friendly solution for customers.
Curt Garner, President, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer at Chipotle, expressed his excitement about the partnership. He stated that Zipotle allows guests to enjoy real food from locations that are typically challenging to serve. He also highlighted that Zipline's commitment to building an efficient and environmentally friendly delivery experience aligns with Chipotle's mission to cultivate a better world.
How to Use Zipotle
Eligible customers in the Rowlett, Texas, area can download the Zipline app on their phones and place their Chipotle orders through the app. Once the order is placed, employees will put it into a “Zipping Point,” which allows the drones to autonomously pick up the order for delivery.
The drone then flies to its destination, hovering about 300 feet in the air while the Zip lowers to the ground. The Zip is equipped with technology that automatically avoids obstacles and places the order at the guest’s address gently and precisely.
Keller Rinaudo Cliffton, CEO and Co-Founder of Zipline, described the experience as magical. He said that with Zipline, customers simply tap a button, and minutes later their food appears—hot, fresh, and ultra-fast. He added that families in the Dallas area can now have food delivered by Zipotle for lunch or dinner, turning what once felt like science fiction into a normal part of daily life.
Expanding the Service
Initially, Zipotle will carry orders that weigh up to 5.5 pounds, with plans to increase the weight limit to 8 pounds over time. The first store to offer Zipotle deliveries is located at 3109 Lakeview Parkway in Rowlett, Texas. The new service will operate seven days a week from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. CT, with plans to extend operating hours to 10 p.m. CT in the future.
This exciting development marks a significant step forward in the world of food delivery, combining technology with convenience to create a unique and efficient way for customers to enjoy their favorite meals. As the service expands, it has the potential to change the way people think about how and where they receive their food.
