A Journey Through the Sci-Fi Thriller "Invasion"
Apple TV+ has long been known for its ability to deliver compelling and thought-provoking sci-fi thrillers. From Severance and For All Mankind to Foundation and Silo, the streaming service has consistently offered content that captivates audiences looking for something unique and engaging. However, not every show can be a hit, and one of Apple’s more recent sci-fi offerings has faced mixed reactions from both fans and critics.
The series Invasion, which debuted in 2021, quickly became one of Apple’s most polarizing sci-fi shows. It received a 48% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 47% score from fans. While some praised Season 1 as “a masterclass of sci-fi terror akin to the Alien franchise,” others criticized it as “a slow-moving, often tedious disaster drama.” Season 2 saw an improvement, with critical scores rising to 67% and audience ratings increasing to 54%. Despite this progress, the third season, which returned to Apple TV+ on August 22, 2025, after a two-year break, appears to have taken a step back.
Critics and fans alike have expressed disappointment with the pacing and storytelling in Season 3. Archi Sengupta from LeisureByte.com described it as “slower than you'd expect,” while Katie Doll from CBR noted that the show “still manages to miss the giant step it's trying to take to secure itself as a prestigious sci-fi drama.” Fan reviews have also been less than favorable, with some calling the casting choices “the worst on all of television” and others suggesting that “if Episode 1 was any indication, then the show is a house of cards and the season is a mighty wind.”
Despite these criticisms, many viewers have remained loyal to Invasion. The show continues to draw attention, sitting at #1 on the global charts and #3 on the U.S. charts behind Chief of War and Platonic. This indicates that there is still a significant audience interested in seeing the story through to its conclusion.
Will There Be a Season 4 of Invasion?
As of now, Apple TV+ has not officially renewed Invasion for a fourth season. This leaves the future of the show uncertain, as the creators, Simon Kinberg and David Weil, had envisioned a four-season arc. Kinberg recently shared his hopes with ScreenRant, expressing that he believes the audience will support the show long enough to see the final act:
“Obviously, it's ultimately up to the audience, but I'd always imagined that this was a four-season show. At the end of this season, there are some things that have some measure of closure, and there are some things that are still open, and I think there's still real ground to cover with these characters. But, you know, that's out of my hands, and really up to the audience.”
With the show having already run for three seasons and maintaining a strong presence on the charts, it seems logical that Apple may consider a fourth and final season. Even though Invasion has been one of Apple’s more divisive sci-fi thrillers, it clearly has a dedicated fanbase that is willing to see it through to the end, no matter the challenges.
Looking Ahead
As more episodes of Season 3 continue to air, the reception could shift, potentially leading to a renewal for a fourth season. For now, fans remain hopeful that Invasion will receive the chance to complete its intended narrative arc. The show’s continued popularity and the passionate responses from its audience suggest that it still has a place in the world of sci-fi storytelling. More updates on the future of the series are expected as they become available.
