Upcoming Apple Devices and Innovations
The iPhone 17 family of smartphones is expected to be released in the coming weeks, but Apple has ambitious plans that extend far beyond this year’s models. In his latest newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shared insights into a range of devices that Apple is working on for the near and distant future.
Gurman highlights that while many of these are “incremental upgrades,” there are several exciting developments in the pipeline. From wearables and smart home devices to computing products, Apple is preparing a variety of updates and new releases.
Wearables and Smart Home Devices
This year, Apple will continue its tradition of annual updates for the Apple Watch. Additionally, there are expectations for the release of HomePod minis, a faster Vision Pro, and the first major refresh of the Apple TV box since 2022.
One of the most anticipated updates is the AirPods Pro 3. According to Gurman, this model will feature heart-rate monitoring, along with improvements in sound quality and battery life. However, there may be limitations for users who already own an Apple Watch, as similar features on the PowerBeats Pro 2 only activate the heart-rate sensor when no Apple Watch is connected.
Computing Products and Accessories
On the computing front, Apple is set to release the M5 iPad Pro this year, alongside updated iPad Air models. Next year, the company is expected to launch the M5 MacBook Pros and the M5 MacBook Air. Gurman also mentions that “major Mac accessories” are in development, including a new external display. This follows reports of test panels with codenames J427 and J527, suggesting that Apple is finally catching up on its display offerings after the last update six years ago.
Another long-awaited product is the HomePod with a screen. Although it could initially be a simple mini screen, Gurman suggests it might be more advanced, potentially competing with Amazon and Google’s smart displays. A recent report indicated the possibility of a six- to seven-inch OLED panel, which sounds promising.
Future Innovations and Concepts
Looking further ahead, Apple is exploring several innovative concepts. These include smart glasses, a more affordable version of the Vision Pro, AirPods with cameras, a giant foldable iPad, a home security camera system, and even a tabletop robot. While these ideas are still in development, they hint at Apple’s continued push toward integrating technology into everyday life.
The Case of the AirPods Max
Despite all these advancements, one product is notably absent from the list: the AirPods Max. These over-ear headphones are set to celebrate their fifth anniversary this December. While a minor update replacing the Lightning port with USB-C was expected, Apple has not made any significant changes.
Gurman notes that the AirPods Max are in a difficult position commercially. They are popular enough to remain on sale but not popular enough to justify a major redesign. As a result, Apple is likely focusing its efforts on its more successful in-ear AirPods models. For now, fans of the AirPods Max will have to wait for a more substantial update.
Conclusion
Apple continues to innovate across its product lines, with updates and new devices planned for both the short and long term. From wearable tech to smart home solutions and cutting-edge computing, the company is shaping the future of consumer electronics. Whether through incremental improvements or groundbreaking concepts, Apple remains a key player in the ever-evolving tech landscape.
