A Parent’s Call for Safer Online Spaces for Children
Nikki Reed, known for her role in the "Twilight" series, has taken on a new mission focused on the safety of children online. Recently, she addressed the growing concerns surrounding the impact of technology on young people, particularly highlighting the need for better protection measures.
Reed began by discussing a topic that she is deeply passionate about: the safety of children in the digital world. She pointed out that more and more parents are choosing to limit the sharing of their children's images online, which she believes signals an important conversation is taking place. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and other technologies, many parents are becoming increasingly aware of the risks associated with the internet. This awareness has led some to adjust their social media settings, either by restricting access to close friends or making their accounts private. According to Reed, this isn't due to a lack of desire to share, but rather a growing concern about the absence of clear laws governing online safety.
She emphasized the need for social media platforms to prioritize the safety of children, stating, "The truth is, the internet is a wild place, with repercussions that go far beyond what we can comprehend, which is why I have always been fiercely private and protective of all tiny humans." Reed argued that no one should be allowed to share photos or videos of other people's children without parental consent. She noted that there are already accounts dedicated solely to posting content of other people's children, and questioned why such practices aren't considered inappropriate or shut down.
Reed also called for stronger guidelines from social media companies to reflect the concerns of parents. She stressed the importance of creating rules that allow those who want to share their children's lives online to do so easily, while also ensuring that those who prefer to keep their children private feel protected.
In addition to her advocacy, Reed shared a personal strategy she uses to protect her children from being photographed online. She revealed that her children wear a knitted sweater that reads "No Instagram please" during social gatherings, preventing others from snapping pictures of them.
Reed and her partner, Ian Somerhalder, have been together since 2014 and married in 2015. They have two children: a daughter named Bodhi Soleil, born in 2017, and a son, whose name has not been disclosed, born in 2023.
In a previous interview, Reed spoke about the importance of self-compassion for mothers, emphasizing that they should celebrate their achievements and recognize the incredible work their bodies do. She encouraged mothers to acknowledge their strength and resilience.
As celebrity parents, Reed and Somerhalder are raising strong, resilient daughters who are likely benefiting from the values and protections instilled in them. Their approach to parenting reflects a commitment to both safety and support in a rapidly changing digital landscape.
