AST SpaceMobile’s Ambitious Satellite Deployment Plan
AST SpaceMobile, Inc. is making significant strides in the development of a space-based mobile network infrastructure. The company is on track to deploy between 45 and 60 satellites in orbit by the end of 2026. This ambitious plan follows the successful deployment of its first five commercial satellites, known as BlueBird, into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). These satellites represent a major milestone in the company's mission to create a reliable and expansive satellite communication system.
The BlueBird satellites are equipped with the largest-ever commercial communications arrays, covering an area of 693 square feet. These advanced systems enable non-continuous service across the United States, utilizing over 5,600 cells within the premium low-band spectrum. This technology marks a significant advancement in providing connectivity to remote areas where traditional ground-based infrastructure may be lacking or unavailable.
This achievement builds upon the success of the company's earlier project, the BlueWalker 3 satellite. This satellite created a space-based cellular broadband network that can directly connect with mobile devices, eliminating the need for extensive ground-based infrastructure. By expanding its reach, AST SpaceMobile aims to ensure that more people have access to essential communication services, particularly in underserved regions.
Expanding Capabilities with Block 2 BlueBird Satellites
AST SpaceMobile has completed the assembly of microns for phased arrays of eight Block 2 BlueBird satellites. This will be the largest commercial deployment in LEO to date. The company believes that the larger aperture array will allow for greater spectrum reuse, enhanced signal strength, and increased capacity. This innovation could reduce the number of satellites needed to achieve comprehensive service coverage compared to smaller aperture designs.
According to management, this advancement is expected to provide nationwide intermittent service in the United States by the end of 2025. Following this, the company plans to extend its services to the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada in the first quarter of 2026. This expansion highlights the growing potential of AST SpaceMobile to deliver high-quality satellite communication solutions globally.
Competitive Landscape in Satellite Communication
AST SpaceMobile operates in a competitive landscape alongside companies such as Viasat, Inc. (VSAT) and Iridium Communications Inc. (IRDM). Iridium currently manages one of the largest commercial constellations, consisting of 66 operational LEO satellites. Its mesh architecture provides dedicated commercial global voice and data communications services to both businesses and governments worldwide.
Iridium has been actively investing in technology upgrades, aiming to launch satellite services for Direct-to-Device and satellite-based personal communication devices. These efforts position Iridium as a strong competitor in the evolving satellite communication market.
Viasat is also making substantial investments in its ViaSat-3 broadband communications platform. This next-generation system will offer nearly ten times the bandwidth capacity of its predecessor, ViaSat-2. The ViaSat-3 platform is designed to form a global broadband network, providing consumers with affordable, high-quality, high-speed internet and video streaming services.
In late 2024, Viasat collaborated with BSNL, a leading Indian telecommunication service provider, to demonstrate direct-to-device satellite services. This partnership highlights the potential for Viasat to challenge AST SpaceMobile in key markets such as India.
Financial Performance and Market Outlook
From a financial perspective, AST SpaceMobile has shown strong performance, gaining 39.4% over the past year, outpacing the industry's growth of 25.6%. The company trades at a forward price-to-sales ratio of 89.41, significantly higher than the industry average. This valuation reflects investor confidence in the company's long-term growth potential.
The Zacks Consensus Estimate for AST SpaceMobile’s earnings for 2025 has seen an upward trend over the past 60 days, indicating positive expectations for the company’s future performance. Currently, AST SpaceMobile carries a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold), suggesting a balanced outlook for investors.
As AST SpaceMobile continues to expand its satellite network and compete in the global satellite communication market, its progress and financial performance will remain closely watched by investors and industry analysts alike.
