Instead of using traditional acid baths, the researchers melted the solder at 450 degrees Celsius (842 degrees Fahrenheit) to separate it from the copper. They then used vacuum distillation at 1,150 degrees Celsius (2,102 degrees Fahrenheit) to remove the lead, leaving the tin and copper intact. This process produces no toxic runoff or chemical waste, making it a safer and more sustainable option.

"By exploiting simple physical properties … this method avoids chemicals entirely," the Association reported. This breakthrough is not only beneficial for recyclers but also for public health. Additionally, recycling one ton of PV ribbon can recover over 80,000 yuan — roughly $11,000 — in copper and tin. This represents a significant financial gain that would otherwise be lost, as well as reducing the need for mining new metals.

Odessa, Texas, is already demonstrating the potential of a circular economy. A local solar company is using secondhand panels to power its own recycling plant, showcasing how renewable energy can support sustainable practices. In Georgia, another solar recycling plant is helping transform used panels into reusable parts, further emphasizing the importance of recycling in the solar industry.

A study published in ScienceDirect found that circular solar setups can cut costs and improve energy efficiency. This research highlights how smarter recycling today can enhance clean energy tomorrow.

The advancements in recycling are not limited to PV ribbons. Researchers have also discovered a safer way to produce perovskite solar cells using a water-based fluoride solution instead of harmful solvents.
